Just days after a 7-year-old girl from Queens was taken into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, protesters gathered on Monday to demand improved conditions for immigrants held in detention. Immigration advocates and healthcare professionals rallied outside 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan, calling for better medical care for those in ICE custody. One protester, Steve, expressed outrage over the family separations, saying, “Children are being taken from their families, sometimes for good. It’s heartbreaking — and fundamentally wrong.” Another demonstrator added, “People are being held in buildings unfit for overnight stays, and many are being denied even the most basic medical care.”
